Kabul (BNA) President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani conferred high state medal of Malali, hero of the Maiwand battle to Katherine Jane Wilson, the Australian aid worker for her humanitarian assistance to Afghan women, a presidential statement said.
Thanking president Ghani for honoring her with high state medal, the Australian aid worker appreciated the Afghan National Security Forces for their efforts over releasing her from the grip of abductors.
“I love Afghans and will remain committed to continue my humanitarian assistance to Afghan women,” she said. The Afghan Special Forces have rescued the kidnapped Australian aid worker on Monday, four months after she was taken at gunpoint in the country’s volatile east.
Unidentified masked gunmen kidnapped Wilson from Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan, in late April when she was visiting the city for a women’s embroidery project.
“As a result of our efforts, she has been safely released. Several suspects have been detained and our investigation is still going on,” NDS said in a brief statement.
Wilson, a well-known aid worker in the country, ran a non-governmental organization known as Zardozi, which promotes the work of Afghan artisans – particularly women.
