President Ghani Welcomes EU’s Commitments for Peace, Development in Afghanistan

Kabul (BNA) The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, met yesterday afternoon with EU Ambassador to Afghanistan Pierre Mayaudon, the presidential press office statement said.
During the meeting at the Arg, the President expressed his gratitude for the recent decision of the Council of the European Union on Afghanistan's peace and development.
The two sides also discussed how to prepare for the Geneva conference, according to the statement. The Council adopted conclusions reaffirming the EU's political commitment to support the people of Afghanistan on their path towards peace, security, stability, democracy, prosperity and self-reliance a couple of weeks ago.
The EU will condition its future political and financial support to ensure that the republican, democratic and values-based principles are protected and further promoted.
The conclusions also reiterated the EU's support for a negotiated political settlement leading to lasting peace and reconciliation, which must build on the democratic and human rights achievements of the past 19 years.
