Kabul (BNA) Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow the people, companies and different organizations to create, share, or exchange information, career, interests, ideas, pictures and videos in virtual communities and networks. Some of the most popular social media websites are Facebook, WhatsApp, Tumplr, Instagram, Twitter, Baidu, Tieba and Snapchat. Social media have been warmly welcomed by people of the world since their establishment, through which everyone follows a goal. In some cases, sharing opinions, suggestions and criticizes can cause to create groups and can positively and negatively affect the society. In fact, the social media have changed the world into a small village, as with each passing day, more people from around the globe join them that is a step towards globalization. Social media can have positive and negative effects in any societies, but the common point is that they have provided the way to share information in a short time. The users of social media are undoubtedly more than other media, and their number is considerably increasing by each passing day.
Internet in Afghanistan began in 2002 after the Karzai administration took office in Kabul. It was seriously prohibited prior to 2002, because, the Taliban regime believed that it broadcasts obscene, immoral, and anti-Islamic issues and programs. Establishment of communication networks and their expansion to villages have noticeably reduced the people problems. Likewise, the supporters of free media have asked the government to name the first week of Asad{the fifth month of Afghans} as ‘Social media Week’ and to be mentioned in official calendar of the country, but no step has still been taken in the respect. Social media play significant role in any country, as the citizens of Arabian countries could launch great revolutions against the dictatorships through them. Suppressing Gadhafi’s government in Libya and Hosni Mubarak in Egypt are the eminent examples made by social media.
A schoolteacher, Adibullah Nadim believes that in some cases, the people post the truths through social media and share them with others.
However, social media are being used in different ways, but unfortunately, some people use them in negative ways which can cause to create discriminations among different tribes in a country, Nadim added. A mostly common negative effect of social media is it leads to addiction. Spending hours on the social sites can divert the focus and attention from a particular task. It lowers the motivational level of the people, especially of the teenagers and students. They mainly rely on technology and the internet instead of learning the practical knowledge and expertise of the everyday life. Kids can be also greatly affected by the social networking sites if they are allowed to use them. A Kabul citizen, Walid Ahmad said, social media can have positive and negative effects in a country, as their benefit is that the people can receive information, exchange views or share their opinions with each other.
But the negative effects are that some uneducated people try to improve unacceptable traditions and to confuse the public minds by posting wrong or baseless issues.
