“In a few short days Afghan women and men will head to the polls to choose their next president and provincial council members”, a statement from the ambassador lyons’s press office said.
This election will be an historic one, marking the first democratic transfer of power in Afghan history. Equally significant is the unprecedented number of women who have registered to vote, it said.
April 5th will be an opportunity for Afghans to exercise their democratic rights by casting their ballots. Credible and constitutional elections are essential to the future security, stability, and prosperity of Afghanistan. Canada encourages all Afghan citizens to participate peacefully in this process. In particular, Canada calls on Afghan women to take advantage of this opportunity to make their voices heard. Women represent half of Afghanistan’s population and must have an equal say in its future. “As Canada’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, I can assure you that the Canadian Embassy and my government have been and will continue to support Afghanistan’s efforts to hold transparent and inclusive elections in accordance with the Afghan Constitution and the procedures established by Afghan law, the statement concluded.
